Classical Weekend 2025 Choir Crawl

Celebrate the launch of the Classical Weekend with a fantastic, open-for-all “Choir Crawl” through some favourite haunts in Sheffield.

The choir will be stopping by some wonderful locations through town to sing a selection of choral favourites from the 16th century through to modern day.

View Me Lord – Richard Lloyd
  • A meditative setting of a poem by Thomas Campion, this piece has become a firm favourite of choirs across the country.
Abendlied – Josef Rheinberger
  • Probably the best known piece by the composer, a beautiful sacred motet, “Evening song”
Ubi Caritas – Ola Gjeilo
  • One of the most famous pieces by the famous Norwegian composer, with it’s gentle melody and colourful, warm harmonies.
Ave Maria – Robert Nathaniel Dett
  • A beautiful rendition of the traditional prayer to the virgin Mary, set by Canadian-American composer Robert Nathaniel Dett
My Heart in Thine – Charles Stanford
  • A song of depth and emotional connection, from the Irish composer’s collection of 8 partsongs. A favourite of concerts and weddings.
Lay a Garland – Robert Pearsall
  • Stunning 8 part madrigal with rich harmonies, suspensions and polyphonic writing.
Crucifixus a 8 – Antonio Lotti
  • The most well known work by Lotti from the ‘Credo in F’, an evocative piece with imitative textures and rich layering of the voices.
Set me as a Seal – Rene Clausen
  • A pensive and expressive favourite of concerts, weddings, and church services, Clausen’s setting of this text is simple, poignant and beautiful.
Beati Quorum Via – Charles Stanford
  • Another piece by the Anglican choral giant, this 6 part motet is one of Stanford’s most exquisite compositions
Rise Up My Love – Healey Wilan
  • Text from the Song of Solomon, set in a peaceful and flowing style by the English-Canadian composer and scotch enthusiast, Healey Wilan.
The Goslings – Frederick Bridge
  • This humorous part song by Sir Frederick Bridge tells the story of an unfortunate young gosling. Guaranteed to put a smile on your face!
Goodnight Sweetheart – Carter & Hudson
  • A light-hearted fireside classic, and the perfect number to conclude this Classical Sheffield Choral Crawl.
