The Sheffield Innovation Spine is about essential growth

Sheffield is rapidly establishing itself as one of the UK's leading innovation destinations. With world-class research, a highly skilled talent pool, internationally recognised strengths in advanced manufacturing, health technology and life sciences, and rising levels of early-stage investment, the city has all the ingredients needed to support the next generation of high-growth businesses.

Yet for many years, one significant challenge remained. As innovative businesses grew, many struggled to find the specialist space they needed for research, development, testing and scale-up activity. Too often, this meant companies looking beyond Sheffield to continue their growth journey, risking the loss of talent, intellectual property, investment and economic value from the city.

The Sheffield Innovation Spine was established in 2024 with a twenty-year ambition to address that challenge. A response to clear market demand, the Spine brings together local government, universities, business support organisations and private sector partners to create the conditions for knowledge-led businesses to start, scale and succeed in Sheffield city centre.

Designed to support business density, innovation and investment, the Spine is helping transform a key stretch of the city centre into a connected ecosystem of incubators, laboratories, flexible workspaces and innovation facilities.

By linking existing assets and encouraging new development, it aims to attract founders, occupiers, investors and talent while supporting the continued growth of Sheffield's innovation economy.

The Spine is also a major opportunity for inward investment. By creating the environments that ambitious companies need to grow, it strengthens Sheffield's ability to attract both domestic and international investment, while reinforcing the city's role within the wider Northern innovation economy.

Located in the heart of Sheffield, close to university campuses, research facilities, cultural venues and independent businesses, the Spine combines innovation infrastructure with the quality of life, connectivity and distinctive character that make Sheffield an attractive place to live, work and build a business.

At its heart, the Sheffield Innovation Spine is a partnership-led initiative. Key partners include Sheffield Technology Parks, Sheffield City Council, The University of Sheffield, Sheffield Hallam University and South Yorkshire Mayoral Combined Authority, alongside the wider innovation ecosystem.

Together, they are creating a connected and collaborative environment that helps businesses thrive, supports economic growth and positions Sheffield as a leading destination for innovation, investment and enterprise. The Spine is live!

The setting features wooden benches arranged in rows, a pergola-style structure overhead, and a small tree planted in the center. Behind them is a multi-story building with teal panels and large windows, displaying signage that reads “Pennine Five” and “Offices To Let.”

The beginning of the Spine: Phlux at Pennine Five

Phlux Technology is a University of Sheffield tech spin out that is taking up residence in the newly redeveloped Pennine Five building. Their breakthrough infra-red sensor technology is revolutionising the performance of automated driver technology in the automotive industry, but they are also working with the European Space Agency too on satellite terminals.

A perfect example of Sheffield's making heritage combining with the scale up potential the city has to offer as a result of the facilities being put in place and the talent available on the doorstep, we are delighted that this move from Phlux is the heralding of the type of activity the Innovation Spine can be central to on a regular basis.
