The modern makers at No Bounds 2022

The No Bounds 2022 program leads with major pieces of work exploring new technologies, yet with a collective and collaborative approach, as well as cross continental musical dialogues.

Here's Liam O'Shea, festival director, with more information.

"Patterns in between intelligences" is an interdisciplinary group of artists, consisting of the live coders Alex McLean and Lizzie Wilson, the e-Textile designer Mika Satomi and the performers Deva Schubert and Juan Felipe Amaya Gonzalez. Using AI they explore a ritualist and spiritual dimension to ask, "CAN AI BE USED TO TRANSCEND ITSELF?"

Also, No Bounds is excited to continue our commissioned work with Mark Fell and Rian Treanor and the development of their groundbreaking multiplayer music website intersymmetric.xyz. The project launches at No Bounds 2022 with a performance featuring groups of kids in Rotherham and Kampala, using the website to make music collaboratively on their mobile phones, outputting straight into the festival Sound System in real time, peak time. This brings people together forming new musical dialogues and cross-continental collaboration.

We are extremely excited to welcome new curators and partnerships this year including Amy Carter Gordon who will be working with the festival in collaboration with Sheffield Hallam University to open up two new amazing city centre spaces to house installations from some of the UK's leading artists.

Moore St substation

We are thrilled to be accessing the legendary brutalist Moore Street Substation (only the 2nd ever time this space has been used) which is a fully working electricity substation in the heart of the city. This will house a new commission by David Cotterrell and Shelly Knotts “God’s Eve View IV (Conflict)”, which explores the anthropomorphisation of data through sound and visual art.

We are installing new works at SADACCA’s (Sheffield and District African Carribean Community Association) GMill. Here Lise Autogena & Joshua Portway’s "196.85ml/h" explores issues of climate change where a drip of oil fills the room at the same rate the ocean levels are rising. Meanwhile Noemie Soula’s “Mythical Living Data” is an enquiry into the future of data storage.

Finally, we are very excited to work with artist Mikk Murray who is exhibiting his nature based artworks at J.G.Graves Woodland Discovery Centre. Our developing wellbeing strand intersects with visual art in a new section of the programme that involves woodland walks and nature based art workshops led by Mikk. In these he invites us all into his practice and inspires us into using the natural world as a canvas we can all you to express our creativity.
