Festival of the Outdoors 2025

The Festival of the Outdoors is back! Throughout March, celebrate The Outdoor City and our lush green spaces. From large-scale international sporting events to small community gatherings; from guided walks to some of the worlds hardest bouldering problems; outdoor markets to film festivals, there's something for everyone.

It might come as a surprise to know that The Burbage Valley is technically part of the city of Sheffield (this is one of the many reasons we call ourselves The Outdoor City!). Accessible by bus from Sheffield city centre, Burbage offers a diverse range of gritstone climbing – from friendly routes to boulder problems, and powerful challenging climbs to classic routes.

Blacka Moor - deer & moorland in the city

The moorland in and around south-western Sheffield acts as a link between the city itself and the wider Peak District National Park. Much of this vast space, that lies within the city boundary, is in public or charitable ownership and as such is accessible and well-maintained and has vast species of flora and fauna, including red deer.

Hillsborough Park is located approximately 3 miles north-west of Sheffield City Centre. The park features sports facilities, a children's playground and walled garden, along with a park cafe operated by Depot Bakery.

Pound's Park

Pound’s Park, named after Sheffield’s first Chief Fire Officer, Superintendent John Charles Pound, is hugely popular spot for everyone in the city to relax and for children to play.

Sheffield Grand Prix 2025

Bringing competitive cycling back to the streets of Sheffield's city centre, Sheffield Grand Prix returns on Wednesday 16 July 2025. 

Sheffield Botanical Gardens

Situated close to the urban city centre, Sheffield Botanical Gardens were opened in 1836 and now cover 19 acres on a south-west sloping site. The Gardens are listed by English Heritage as a Grade II site of special historic and architectural interest.

South Street Park Amphitheatre

Easily accessible from over the Supertram bridge at Park Square roundabout, or out the rear entrance of the train station, in South Street Park, it has fantastic views across to the city centre, and has been used for performances, screenings and installations.

Grey to Green

Grey to Green is an award-winning scheme bringing colour and sustainability to inner-city Sheffield.  The UK’s longest ‘green street’ and largest retrofit sustainable urban drainage scheme, it offers a calming refuge in an urban environment while encouraging cycling and walking too.

Greenhill Park

Greenhill Park, situated in Lowedges, is one of the 20 District Parks in Sheffield.

Greno Woods

Greno Woods is an ancient woodland, rich in wildlife and full of historic interest. Covering 169 hectares, it is one of our largest reserves and offers excellent opportunities for wildlife watching, exploration and recreation.

Ruskin Park

The park is situated between Walkley Street, Daniel Hill Street, Harold Street and Burgoyne Road in Walkley.

South Street Park

South Street Park has an arboretum, or living tree collection, and a beautiful amphitheatre.

Wadsley and Loxley Common

Wadsley and Loxley Common is an area of managed heathland in the North of Sheffield. It's principle use is by walkers.

Wardsend Cemetery

Wardsend Cemetery has stood on its site by the River Don for the last 160 years. This cemetery is the last resting place of nearly 30,000 Sheffield and district people as well as military personnel from the nearby Sheffield (Hillsborough) Barracks. In the course of more than a century and a half, a wide variety of flora and fauna have also begun to call the cemetery home.

Sheffield's indoor climbing walls

The spiritual home of UK climbing boasts the Tokyo Olympics replica wall and Team GBs training facilities for those wanting to push themselves, as well as The Mini Works - a dedicated centre for younger and beginner climbers - meaning you won't go wanting in The Outdoor City when it comes to indoor centres.

Reservoir walks in Low Bradfield

Low Bradfield is surrounded by four reservoirs. The closest of the four are Agden and Damflask, and the village is a great starting point for a picturesque waterside walk round one or the other – or both.

Dovestone Tor

High on Derwent Edge, Dovestone Tor has a wilder feel than most crags in the area. The longer walk in, and the fact that the sharp, gritty rock can sometimes be green, mean that it’s rarely busy up here – a perfect place to escape the crowds on a dry, sunny day.

Ride the Eastern Moors

The Eastern Moors circuit has spectacular views with downhill sections that are fast and flowing - but it is suitable for all abilities.

Ecclesall Woods

Ecclesall Woods is an ancient woodland in south-west Sheffield, between Abbeydale Road South and Ecclesall. Endcliffe Park

Endcliffe Park is a large park and popular family visitor destination in Sheffield. Comprising parkland as well as woodland, is the first in a series of parks and green spaces, known collectively as Porter Valley Parks, which you can follow all the way out to Peak District.

Stoneface Creative Ltd

Tour of Britain 2024

South Yorkshire will host stage three of the men’s race which attracts top international cyclists, including Olympic and Tour de France champions. The stage will begin in Sheffield, the first time the race has visited the city in 20 years and will then head through Rotherham and Doncaster before finishing in Barnsley.

Sheffield Walking Festival

Taking place over ten days each September, the festival celebrates all sides of Sheffield with a whole host of enjoyable walks of varying lengths, with plenty to see and discover along the way. This year the festival will take place 6 - 15 September 2024.
