Written entirely in rhyme, The Hypochondriac is Roger McGough’s hilarious take on Moliere’s seventeenth century comic satire of the medical profession.
Argan, the hypochondriac of the title, is so obsessed with his physical well-being, particularly the efficacy of his bowels, that he squanders his money on the pills, potions and procedures prescribed by his rapacious doctors.
As his medical expenses accumulate, he hatches a plan to marry off his daughter to one of these quack doctors. Fortunately, his clever, truth-telling maid, Toinette, is on hand to help him see the light.
Stuffed full with witty lines, farcical encounters, comical characters and silly songs, the play is bound to put a smile on your face. It’s just what the doctor ordered!
