The original guided 90-minute walk to hear about the people, places and events around Sheffield City Centre, as we explore the remarkable history of Sheffield's growth as a crucible for the modern game of football.

From 1857 to 1875 over 200 football clubs emerged in Sheffield playing to the 'Sheffield Rules' of football.

Sheffield boasts many recognised World footballing firsts and innovations of the modern game including: 

  • Oldest football club
  • First published official Rules of Football
  • Oldest knockout tournament trophy
  • First team from an industrial works
  • First intercity football game
  • First football game played under electric floodlights
  • Initiators of the fixed crossbar, the corner flag and pitch dimensions
  • Architects (and saviours) of the modern game, including Nathaniel Creswick, John C Shaw, William Chesterman, Harry W Chambers and the Clegg family
  • Pioneering players such as Jack Hunter and Billy Mosforth
