Tropical Butterfly House welcomes four new baby goats
13 February 2018
It's been an emotional time for the staff of the Tropical Butterfly House, Wildlife & Falconry Centre in North Anston, near Sheffield, as three of the resident goats have given birth to four adorable babies.
Sadly it's not been all good news, as the first goat to go into labour on 22 January, Beauty, (originally born at the wildlife centre in 2009) had a complicated birth, and her, and her first baby, did not survive. The amazing staff at Portland Vets however managed to save the second baby’s life by performing an emergency caesarian section. The miracle baby boy has been named Beau in honour of his mother.
In the first few nerve-wracking days Beau, a baby pygmy goat, was cared for around the clock in the Small Animal House by dedicated animal staff until he was strong enough to join the rest of the goats in the Farm Barn.
Just a few days later, on 26 January, two more baby pygmy goats arrived, Sprinkles and Gaston, to mother Pepper. Sprinkles joined Beau in the Small Animal House as she needed monitoring; Beau and Sprinkles have since built a strong bond and where Beau goes, Sprinkles is right behind him.
The following week, on 3 February, a fourth baby was born to mum Nell, animal staff have named the baby pygmy Saanen goat Floss, as she is completely white, and looks the spitting image of her grandmother Flo. Floss is very energetic, and is a big fan of jumping!
Abigail Carter, Animal Team Leader; “The baby goats are incredibly cute; it’s wonderful to see visitors reactions to seeing the baby goats for the first time, and the joy that feeding a baby goat brings!”
Visitors can help feed the baby goats every day in the Farm Barn, until they’re all grown up, see the encounters timetable on arrival for times.
The Tropical Butterfly House is open daily, located just five minutes from the M1, junction 31, with free parking. There's also a special programme of Dinosaur themed fun activities this week and next, especially for the Half Term holidays 10 - 25 February.
