In fact, Sheffield and snooker have been together for nearly 50 years.
Since 1977, the sport’s best players have battled it out for the prestigious World Championship trophy in the unique and intense atmosphere of the iconic, Crucible Theatre, with some of snooker’s most iconic moments have taken place here.
Each April, the event attracts around 12,000 snooker fans from across the globe to Sheffield, while another 500 million (across 150 countries) watch the action live on BBC Sport and Eurosport.
The final of the championships often falls on the first May Bank Holiday Monday in England and sees millions of viewers tune in for the dramatic climax to the tournament.
And Snooker’s long-standing heritage has made its mark in Sheffield well beyond the Crucible.

Halo World Snooker Qualifiers
The qualifiers for snooker's biggest event run 7 - 16 April at the English Institute of Sport in Sheffield. With 128 players set to compete for 16 coveted spots at the Crucible, tickets to the qualifiers are just £12 per day.
2025 Halo World Snooker Championship
The 2025 edition of snooker's biggest event is set to take place Saturday 19 April - Monday 5 May, at the iconic Crucible Theatre in Sheffield once again.
IT service provider, Halo, have been announced as the title sponsor for the 2025 tournament.
World Seniors Snooker Championship 2025
The World Snooker Championship 2025 is followed by The World Seniors Snooker Championship with many of the legends of yesteryear once again competing at the Crucible.
World Snooker Green Carpet Ceremony
Snooker fans in Sheffield will have the chance to see their heroes walking to the Crucible, through Tudor Square on a special green carpet on the eve of the Halo World Championship on Friday 18 April.
