International Fingerprint Research Group gather in Sheffield

26 June 2019

World leading researchers from 12 different countries have been gathering in Sheffield this week for the International Fingerprint Research Group, taking place at Sheffield Hallam University 23 – 28 June.

The meeting has been brought to the city by Professor of Forensic and Bioanalytical Mass Spectrometry at Sheffield Hallam University, Simona Francese, who is also an active member of Sheffield’s Conference Ambassador Programme.

Simona is one of 60 leading world researchers in the International Fingerprint Research Group, who meet biennially to exchange research finding in the detection and identification of latent fingerprints.

While officially the International Fingerprint Research Group has been meeting regularly since 1996, the founding international meet-ups for forensic experts in this field can actually be dated back as far as 1974.

This 2019 meeting involves 48 delegates with a wide range of backgrounds presenting over 50 research papers, over a 5 day programme. It is the only technical meeting devoted solely to the International interchange of research results on fingerprint technologies.

Professor Simona Francese’s fingermark research itself has attracted worldwide coverage in trade and online publications, including BBC's 'The One Show', 'Click', 'Crimewatch Roadshaw' and 'BBC Breakfast', as well as overseas programmes.

Speaking about the Sheffield instalment of this prolific meeting, Simona said:  “On behalf of my fingermark research group, the Centre of Mass Spectrometry Imaging and Sheffield Hallam University, I am delighted and proud to welcome the top 48 scientists in fingerprinting to Sheffield and look forward to sharing and learning exciting science.

“To host such a prestigious meeting where Law Enforcement from around the world and excellence in academia meet to progress this area of forensic science, at a speed and with a quality beyond imagination, is a dream come true.”

The International Fingerprint Research Group is just one example of the many meetings and conferences that take place in the city as a result of passionate Conference Ambassadors, such as Simona, who want to showcase their home-city by hosting an event here.

Sheffield’s Conference Ambassador Programme is a city-wide initiative which works in partnership with the city’s leading academics, medical specialists and experts from industry sectors, to help host these events and drive business tourism.

The Programme has now been running for over 10 years and offers free support with everything from initial bids, advice and planning to booking venues and accommodation.
