Free legal masterclass by Sheffield firm
18 October 2017
Sheffield law firm Ironmonger Curtis will be giving a free masterclass to help businesses in the region ensure they have the foundations in place for growth - The Legal Foundations Masterclass: Building for the future will cover the crucial legal agreements that set companies on the right path.
A session on employment law will cover not only the legal obligations to workers, but will lay out ways in which companies can protect their intellectual property and their customer base.
It will be delivered by a team of commercial lawyers, fronted by Jon Curtis, an experienced employment lawyer and founding partner of Ironmonger Curtis.
The project, which runs until March 2019, is part-funded by the England European Regional Development Fund, as part of the European Structural and Investment Funds Growth Programme 2014-2020. It supports growing businesses, including grants of up to 50 per cent towards consultancy projects, a team of business growth specialists and local authority key account managers, plus a series of masterclasses, delivered by experts from the private sector.
It is delivered jointly by five partners: Sheffield City Region Growth Hub, Business Doncaster, Business Sheffield, Enterprising Barnsley and Rotherham Investment and Development Office (RiDO).
Said Jon Curtis: “Ensuring your business has the right legal foundations from the start is the key to creating a company with the capability to expand. Our team will be advising on what legal work you need to avoid future pitfalls, and sometimes just as importantly, what you don’t.”
The Ironmonger Curtis team will also lecture on the thorny subject of debt, explaining the legalities of staying on top of it and how to win claims against debtors. Said Jon Curtis: “Poor cashflow can sink even the most successful business. Knowing your legal standing when it comes to chasing non-payers can make a real difference to whether a company fails or flourishes.”
Contracts of employment, non-competition clauses, confidentiality and staff handbooks will be addressed, along with shareholders agreements, commercial agreements and their terms and conditions and how to understand business property leases and insist on fair treatment by landlords.
The Legal Foundations Masterclass: Building for the future will run on Wednesday November 8, 1-4.30pm, First Floor of 11 Broad Street West, Sheffield S1 2BQ.
The event will start with refreshments and networking. Book on at https://www.scrgrowthhub.co.uk/masterclasses/
