23 September 2016

World leading Sheffield-based manufacturer and supplier, Vulcan, celebrates three decades of growth today, on their 30th birthday.

The company, which was named after the 64 metre high clock-tower surmounted by a statue of a Vulcan on Sheffield City Council’s Town Hall, was founded in 1986. A key player in their industry, Vulcan manufactures and supplies seals through distributors, spanning many industries, in over 90 different countries worldwide. With their global headquarters located inSheffield, Vulcan has manufacturing and service centres spread across Europe, Asia and America, covering each of the world’s main business time zones.

The Founder and Director of Vulcan Engineering Limited started the company in the front room of his house, working by himself, before moving to offices in Rotherham and then Attercliffe in Sheffield and ending up in The South West Centre off Abbeydale Road, where the company now employs 90 people.

Since it launched in 1986, the company has gone from strength to strength - even in economic downturns Vulcan has seen an average 20% year on year growth. The Sheffield business base alone will turnover in excess of £12 million this year.

Cllr Leigh Bramall, Sheffield City Council Deputy Leader and Cabinet Member for Business and Economy, said: “Vulcan Engineering Limited are an impressive business. Celebrating their 30 years in the city, they have created jobs, launched careers, manufactured, exported and traded worldwide. Success stories like this one really highlight Sheffield’s strengths. We have enviable manufacturing and engineering expertise and capabilities. We have the routes to market and transport links needed to operate on a global scale, and we have the people – talented people like the Vulcan team who have taken an idea and turned it into a product range that is sought after across industries and borders.”

Mr. G. Quinn, Director of Vulcan Engineering Limited, said: “It is an exciting time for us here at Vulcan, celebrating 30 years of continuous year on year growth. We had a vision to service our global distributor base with a guaranteed ex-stock service, across hundreds of thousands of product codes, backed by manufacturing and service centres on three continents and we have achieved it.

“I would say that our success has stemmed from a mixture of continuous investment in our systems, our dedicated colleagues and the service we provide. The key is that our product is globally competitive on quality, price, ex-stock range and service as such we are able to be the number one supplier to the seal industry itself within our main product ranges.”

Unlike any other competitor in the industry, Vulcan guarantee's stocks on all of their main products.  Having designed their own integrated electronic systems from manufacturing through stockholding and forward to a unique web portal system for their partners, clients are able to track orders and determine stock levels and be assured of a global electronic logistics service.

Vulcan also run their very own apprenticeships program, taking on up to five apprentices a year and plan to attend The University of Sheffield’s job fair for the first time this year.

Vulcan's vision for 2020 is to have £20 million turnover from their Sheffield branch alone, whilst continuing to rapidly expand Vulcan Seals Inc. based in Minneapolis and add a new service base in Singapore next year.
