Sheffield has always been a good place to be a lawyer

Lisa Greenstreet, Associate at Freeths LLP, on why she relocated her family to Sheffield to progress her legal career.

After graduating from University I lived in Bristol where I worked for TLT, a national law firm, and specialised in commercial dispute resolution for manufacturing and retail clients. After nearly ten years of working there, I decided that I wanted to really progress my career and build my client base. Sheffield’s manufacturing and retail businesses have a great reputation across the UK and worldwide, and the city has always been a good place to work as a lawyer, so it was the obvious place to move to.

I started working at Freeths LLP in Sheffield this summer. Holding 11 offices across the country, we provide a full range of commercial legal services to our clients who are based locally and nationally. Back in May 2012, Freeths opened offices in Sheffield due to its large business client base. As part of our job, we often travel across the UK, and in particular I regularly travel to London, Leeds and Birmingham. It is so easy to get to all these places, and London is only 2 hours 15 minutes away. Believe it or not, when I was living in Bristol it actually took me longer door to door to get to London!

It’s an exciting time for me to be working at Freeths as I am helping to expand the dispute resolution team here in Sheffield, which gives me real input into building our team. I wanted to live and work in the same city so it’s really important to me that Freeths LLP is based right next to the City Hall, in Sheffield’s city centre. It’s so central, making it great for meeting clients and for our staff to enjoy their lunch breaks.

Sheffield is a great place to be, both from a work and leisure perspective. There are lots of innovative businesses based here, making my work really interesting, and there are plenty of opportunities to network and meet new clients. There’s a real buzz about the city with lots of things going on and the city is constantly developing – for example there are plans to start working on the new retail quarter in the city centre. For a family, it is also a fantastic place to be, as the city has some of the best schools in the country and it is a big city with outdoor living – my kids love the Peaks and getting involved in outdoor activities such as cycling and climbing.

I would really recommend anyone working in law or any legal services firm thinking of moving to Sheffield to do so. There’s a lot of office space available and a wealth of talent from two major universities, as well as high profile clients. Plus, having a thriving, dynamic business community, and the countryside on your doorstep means that you can really make the most of the work-life balance here.
